The program Life + has been the financial instrument of the European Union for the period 2007-2013 which has supported environmental and conservation projects in all EU Member States, in some candidate countries and in some neighboring countries. The overall objective of the program was to contribute to the implementation, the updating and the development of a policy and legislation on the environment, and to facilitate the integration of the environment into other policies, thereby contributing to the sustainable development.
- LIFE + comprises three thematic components
Nature & Biodiversity
for projects that contribute to the implementation of Community policies on nature and biodiversity, in particular the Habitats and Birds Directives, both on a local and regional level, that help to support the further development and implementation of the Natura 2000 network, including habitats, coastal and marine species.
- Environmental Policy & Governance
for projects that contribute to the development and implementation of approaches, technologies, methods and instruments, such as to provide support for a better environmental governance thanks to a broadening stakeholder involvement, including NGOs, the consultation process and the implementation of policies to achieve the EU environmental objectives.
- Information & Communication
for projects through promotional campaigns and the awareness that they are able to disseminate information and education on environmental issues, including forest fire prevention.
From January 2014 the new funding program LIFE has started, and it will be valid for the next seven years.
